Some of us seek a little yin for the caffeine yang. Here are 3 recipes we like to use for after-hours adult brewing:
THE STANDARD BLACK & WHITE
This drink was originally called “the Pharmaceutical Stimulant” invented in 1998 by Dick Bradsell at the Pharmacy, London. It’s the base of the espresso martini craze.
2 Shots Vodka
2 Shots cold espresso
½ Shot Kahlua coffee liqueur
¼ Shot Simple Syrup (2 parts sugar/ 1 part water)
Shake and strain, pour into an Old Fashioned ice-filled glass.
My variations:
The Kahlua, ups the coffee taste but is mainly there for sweetness. If you don’t have Kahlua, you can use more espresso and simple syrup or the only reason for instant coffee to exist, replace the Kahlua with ½ teaspoon of instant coffee.
Like a latte? Add 1 shot of heavy cream.
THE COLDBREWER
If you don’t have an espresso machine and your favourite café is now closed. You should always have a bottle of Rocket Fuel Black Cap in your fridge. Rocket Fuel lasts up to 3 months in the fridge, I always have a bottle just in case we runout of beans (yes I forget to bring them home too). You can add hot water to Rocket Fuel to make the smoothest americano on the planet.
2 Shots Vodka
3 Shots Rocket Fuel Black Cap Cold Brew
½ Shot Cointreau (triple sec in a pinch)
½ Shot Simple Syrup (2 parts sugar/ 1 part water)
Optional: 2 drops “foamee”
Shake hard with ice, and strain into a martini glass.
THE ARRIBA
I think this version is my favourite. Booze forward, not for beginners.
2 Shots Blanco Tequila
3 Shots Rocket Fuel Black Cap Cold Brew
1 Shot Cointreau
1 Shot Bon Accord Caramel Syrup
Hard Shake with ice and strain into old fashion glass, garnish with orange peel.
