About this product

Los Suspiros is part of a greater farm of 10,560 acres, called Alta Mira and owned by Axel’s father. It has been in the family for over 3 generations. Fredy and Axel grew up together, playing basketball. When Fredy went to university, Axel started working his grandfather’s farm. When Fredy returned to work his father’s farm, they became compadres, coffee friends. Axel helped Fredy and his brother with technical forestry support, while Fredy taught Axel how to cup. Los Suspiros is the name of the collaboration between Fredy and Axel representing 3,200 acres. Axel grows the coffee and picks it, and Fredy and his brother process the cherries. They produce 1,400qq pergamino.
Huehue is the highest and driest region of Guatemala, and it is only one of three regions without volcanic soil. Historically, it has been one of the more remote areas of the country and accessibility has been challenging. In the past, many farmers have used oxen or have carried their coffees on their back. Huehuetenango enjoys easy access to water sources, enabling many producers to process their own coffee. Guatemala is a country that has 12 different Mayan dialects and in many towns, people don’t speak Spanish. The challenges in working with smaller groups is sometimes the language barrier which is what is found.
The 2021 harvest challenged farmers with heavy rain fall, dumping it’s much anticipated bumper crop. There were large labour shortages impacting the number of pickers available during the harvest.
