Burundi is often called the heart of Africa, because of its heart-shaped border outline and its central location within the African continent. Burundi has ideal terrain and conditions for growing specialty coffee, with rich volcanic soil, it is located just south of the Equator and enjoys a temperate climate with an annual rainfall of 1200mm.
Bourbon varietals are known to have lovely big juicy “jammy” fruity sweetness, with lovely big bodies and a long aftertaste. This coffee is no exception.
Traditionally coffee coming from Burundi is processed using the fully washed method. We are super excited to have sourced this spectacular Natural processed coffee, where the producers are focusing on quality and sustainable practices. (Natural processed coffee is when after the harvesting, the red cherry is washed and floaters or unripe or overripe cherries are removed as inferior; then the skin and pulp surrounding the coffee beans are left intact and the whole cherry is dried on a raised African drying bed. Once the desired moisture level is reached, think how grapes dry into a raisin, the hard-little dried coffee cherries are milled). Naturally processed coffee has been exposed for longer to the sweet fruity mucilage surrounding the cherry as it dries, so usually present with increased sweet fruity notes.
