A flourishing organization of 168 coffee farming families make up the Asociación de Productores Egológicos de Planadas (ASOPEP), one of the few producers of certified Fair Trade and Organic coffee in Colombia. It’s no small wonder that one can find fantastic quality coffee being produced in and around Planadas. The Idyllic town is blessed with warm days, cool nights, excellent elevation (1300-2170 masl) and healthy trees.
The cooperative itself was formed in January, 2013, with the mission “To be known as an association that creates opportunities for the personal growth of its members, protects the environment, innovates in commercial business processes and is always in the vanguard of specialty coffee producers worldwide.” From their track-record, it’s safe to say that their mission is a success.
ASOPEP have a strong focus on educating members of their community because they’ve realized that sustainability is the key to the country’s continued success in producing specialty grade coffees. The cooperative facilitates internal cupping and barista exhibitions and competitions to build enthusiasm for specialty coffee. They’ve even gone a step further and produced consumer-oriented specialty coffee events to garner interest in buying and drinking specialty coffee.
